What To Know About Dealing With Mice In Your Home

Posted on

Do you have a suspicion that there are mice in your home? You'll likely want to find a way to get rid of the mice once and for all. Here are some tips that will help you do it.

Identify Whether It Is An Actual Mouse Problem

The first thing you'll want to do is figure out if you have small mice in your home or larger rats. If you've actually seen the pest in your home, the size will give you a good idea of what you are dealing with. That's because mice are only about a few inches long, while rats are 2 to 3 times as big in size. If you do not see the pests, you can identify what you have in your home by looking at their droppings. Mice droppings are going to be small and have pointed ends, while rat droppings are larger and have blunt ends. Mice also tend to leave many more droppings compared to rats.

Identify The Signs Of An Infestation

There are a few signs of a mice infestation. In addition to visually seeing them or their droppings, you may see grease marks along baseboards from the greasy fur of these pests. Check your pantry as well, because mice will tend to chew through packaging to get to food, which includes chewing through cardboard boxes and plastic bags.

Once mice are in your home, they tend to not travel far from where they've made their nest. Consider looking in the immediate proximity of where you saw any signs of a mice infestation since they are likely nearby. If you have a cluttered basement and see mice droppings down there, the mice may be hiding in a safe space away from foot traffic.

Identify The Entry Points

If you think you have mice in your home based on the warning signs, figure out how the mice got into your home in the first place. Look for places in your foundation that have small holes where mice could get in. A mouse only needs a hole no bigger than a dime to get into your home, so pay close attention to all potential places where there are holes.

Now that you know for sure that you have mice and how they got into your home, call a local mice exterminator to get rid of them for you. It's the best way to ensure that the nests will be removed and the mice will not come back.
